• Albury with Peter and Helen (print post)

  Bill and Leanne drove us up to Albury so they could also pay a visit to Peter and Helen. They stayed for coffee and buns before heading back for the afternoon milking. Peter took us round to their local backpackers where all their important guests stay. We cleaned and brushed up before heading back and enjoying the afternoon and a few beers with them.During the afternoon Helen got a call that her daughter-in-law was in labour, and later in the evening, that she had a new grand-daughter. She was really quite excited. Peter told us several tales about serving in Malaya, and the better pay the Australian forces got. They could drink decent beer in Singapore whereas the British soldier had to make do with �tops� � rather closer to shandy proportions than we would expect to find in Britain now.

  Of course we had too much beer and ended up watching some American crap on the backpacker tv before falling into bed to be woken up far too early by some eager workman fixing the road outside the window. You gets what you deserve.

  Tuesday morning interview with Roy Waller

  Roy Waller) …..Now, for those of you who might sort of, cast your mind back a few weeks ago, I did the Steve Madden show for two weeks and it was my pleasure to talk to a gentleman called Frank Buykx who was in America, walking across America.   Steve Madden) ..and you well know Frank Buykx’s name by now. Er, Frank has been er, doing what very, very few recently retired travel agents in Norfolk do; which is to say “I’ve always wanted to walk across America and now I’m going to do it.” At the back end of March Frank set out from Washington, pretty much the White House lawn, er, and headed in a westerly direction. Tonight he made it to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It’s journey’s end and congratulations to Frank! :- Hiya Frank?

  S) that it rains all the time….
  F) …not here it doesn’t it’s a georgeous day, I got quite excited this morning I actually saw the Golden Gate Bridge ….from - we climbed a mountain to do it, were in a state national park here, not that far from San Fransciso, we climbed a mountain this morning, 4000 feet

  Steve) We’re going to be talking live to Sacramento in California. We’re going to be talking to Frankie boy, our man Frank Buykx who’s been walking across mythical America, and he’s nearly done it, he’s nearly got to the end of his journey!   Steve) Good afternoon I suppose it is, its about 20 past what ?
  Frank) It is indeed yes, on a lovely sunny day, in the high Sierra Nevada mountains
  S) And how hot is it ?
  F) Oh its wonderfully cool, its about 70, a lovely breeze, sunshine. We’re about 7,500 feet up in the mountains so ..er..its beautiful weather for walking

  I joined my father for a brief week in Nevada on my long journey home from South East Asia. I flew into Salt Lake City on 26th August. He and Ed drive back from Ely in Nevada to pick me up, and we spent a morning exploring Temple Square - the home of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints commonly known as the Mormons. The city is currently gearing up for the Winter Olympics in 2002 bringing to the fore, the Church which is inextricably intertwined with everyday life and law.
