We went along to the Illawarra Dialysis and Transplant Association fundraiser on Saturday night. Its not my normal Saturday night out but cousin Miffy was performing with her belly dancing group as part of the entertainment. The ladies all turned up wrapped in cloaks and veils, very female, very gothic.
We were smuggled into the club and finally allowed to sit at a spare table to the back of the room, as far from the stage as possible. Cameras at the ready, we expected to have to jump up and creep along the walls to get any pictures. Turns out, the dancers could not use the stage because it was too small, so the back became the front and we were in the right there front row. The waiters also got confused. They first brought us some bread rolls, and then a couple of bottles of wine appeared. The moral dilemma was discussed but quickly put to bed and we raised a glass to the IDTA.
The belly dancing ladies put on a fantastic show. They were all shapes and sizes but nothing hides the wiggle of female hips. What a powerful medium for women! Unfortunately many of the people in the audience could not see them (because they were not on a raised stage) and carried on talking all through the dances. Those folks were more interested in the childrens fashion show (sponsored by I cant remember but it was mentioned time and time again) that followed. They probably all had a kid or grandkid in the show.
It was a great evening. If you get a chance to see Miffy dancing (or any group of belly dancers) do go along, you will enjoy it!
