  If you have your atlas open on the Western USA pages, here is my itinerary across Colorado:
  Holly, Granada, Lamar, Hasty, Las Animas, La Junta, Rocky Ford, Fowler, Pueblo, Canyon City, Royal Gorge, Coaldale, Salida, Brown’s Canyon, Noah’s Ark, Spring Canyon, Buena Vista, Granite, Leadville, Granite, Noah’s Ark, Brown’s Canyon, Pancha Springs, Sargents, Doyleville, Gunnison, Blue Mesa, Montrose, Delta, Grand Junction.

  You won’t find all of these places in your atlas, or on a road map for that matter; some of them are not actual towns. (more…)

• Day 70 to Day 100 (print post)

  A hundred days on the road. I can hardly believe it.

  Day seventy, as I recall, was a good day. I walked some twenty miles from El Dorado to Nevada, then on to Deerfield where, at a track stop café, I had a massive mid-afternoon lunch. Another five miles saw me to the Missouri/Kansas state line. There was a second hand and antique store there with a very inviting meadow. I was given permission to pitch my tent there and went to sleep under a clear sky. (more…)

• Indiana to Kansas (print post)

  Day forty saw me in Brownstown Indiana, a medium size town on my way, with a population of around 3,000 and nothing special to recommend it. Day forty was a Friday and on Fridays I do my call to our regional BBC radio station. It seemed easier to stay in Brownstown to make the call, and I needed a day off.

  I enjoy doing my BBC spot. It helps me look for something positive to talk about. I know of at least 12 people who listen to the program. There may be more. (more…)

• Day 40 already (print post)

  Today, early May, in Indiana, is my 40th day on the road. Is something supposed to happen now? I did once visit the place where someone with a capital ‘S’ spent forty days in the wilderness. But then I was in an air-conditioned bus, and the evening I spent in a four-star hotel in Jerusalem. Oh, to be a travel agent again! No such luxuries here - not for me anyway. My forty days have not made me any wiser: I’m still going on with the walk. (more…)
