What could possibly possess a 60-year-old Englishman to walk across a continent?
Curiosity, according to Frank Buykx.
Buykx (pronounced bikes) said the trip from the White House to the Golden Gate Bridge is a lark, more or less.
“It’s for the heck of it,” he said.

Steve Madden) ……Now let’s see what’s going on with Frank Buykx, Frank Buykx is our intrepid walker across the USA, as you will know if you’re a regular listener. Er, Frank has been walking for about nine weeks now. He started out pretty much at the White House lawn and he’s going all the way across America to San Francisco, and er, he’s going to end up at the Golden Gate bridge in about, oh he doesn’t like to think about it, but it’ll be, just between the two of us, in about four months; and let’s find out how he’s been doing in the last week. Today, early May, in Indiana, is my 40th day on the road. Is something supposed to happen now? I did once visit the place where someone with a capital ‘S’ spent forty days in the wilderness. But then I was in an air-conditioned bus, and the evening I spent in a four-star hotel in Jerusalem. Oh, to be a travel agent again! No such luxuries here - not for me anyway. My forty days have not made me any wiser: I’m still going on with the walk. (more…)

Frank was enjoying a late breakfast chatting away to some folks in the Grill Restaurant in Defiance, Missouri, about 50 miles west of St. Louis. Lewis Rosenbaum wrote and told me he is very tanned and doing okay. He had to buy a new pair of hiking boots in St. Louis - the heel was flapping on the old pair. Thats about 1500 miles they have managed. He will get through at least another couple of pairs before this year is out !
Frank has called home and told how difficult is was to find somewhere to buy the boots. He went into the centre of St Louis expecting to find lots of shops, but found nothing. No people, no shops, empty. He asked in the tourist information where he could buy walking shoes and was told he had to go out of town to the mall - 12 miles out. Theres no public transport out there. So how do you get there if you don’t have a car he asked ? This totally flumoxed the woman in tourist information - this is America - everyone has a car ! I don’t know how he got there, but he got there and he is walking again.
Lewis says he was heading for Augusta or Marthasville in Missouri for the Saturday night.

He made it to Augusta on Saturday night. Petra Haynes wrote to tell me [Lucy] she met him walking along the “Katy trail”. She and some friends were at an art studio opening and they invited Frank to join them for refreshments. He ended up staying for dinner and pitching his tent in the garden !

Steve) …..so let’s find out how things are doing in Missouri shall we? I think the way to find out is to check with our Missouri correspondent. Just in case you aren’t up to speed with this, our good friend Frank Buykx has been walking across America. He started just outside the White House and he’s going all the way across, it’s going to take him about six months and he’s six or seven weeks into it now and we’re going to join him now, live in Missouri: (to Dad)- Frank, a very good afternoon to you.

“Did motorists notice a tall thin man wearing a straw hat and backpack walking west on Rt.250 through Lawrence County ? It was Frank Buykx from Upton, Norfolk, England. He is walking across the United States.
“He left his wife and daughters in England and flew to Washington, DC, then on March 27th started walking west. He has travelled through Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and into Illinois arriving in Sumner on Friday afternoon. Buykx, a former travel agent, has been in the States before on business trips but never travelled much through the country. He said “Now I’m doing it the slow way.” He is taking a route through small towns to meet the people and stay away from heavy traffic, hopefully staying on U.S. Rt.50 as much as he can. (more…)

Steve Madden) …….Good grief, it’s eighteen minutes past nine, it’s high time we spoke to someone in America I think! Er, Frank Buykx, who you may or may not know. If, if you’re not a regular listener you won’t know Frank but you’re about to meet him, for the first time. Frank has been walking across mythical America and he’s been doing it these last few weeks. He’s a recently retired travel agent from Norfolk and er, these days he walks for a living! He walks from…..well pretty much…the White House is where he started out and he’s going to end up at the Golden Gate bridge and it’s going to take him about six months altogether. So here we are, round about five weeks into it and Frank joins us right now :- (to Dad) Frank? (more…)

Frank stayed on Maggie’s farm in Washington, Illinois. He enjoyed talking with Maggie and her family and had fun playing with their 3 kittens (yes he is soft really !)
